In 1901, five years after his death, the Nobel Foundation and its awards were created to promote scientific research and world peace.
Every year, the foundation chooses individuals to receive the prestigious prizes.
They are handed out in five categories: Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Peace.
In 1968, an honorary Nobel Prize was added in the field of Economics.
Surprisingly, the 2020 Peace Prize was not given to an individual.
Instead, the recipient was the World Food Programme (WFP).*
It is an organization that helps fight hunger throughout the globe.
The group’s work has been especially important during the coronavirus pandemic.
That is because the economies of many countries are struggling, leading to more hungry people.
This year was also notable for having four Nobel Laureates who are women.
Three female scientists won in Physics and Chemistry, along with their male colleagues.
Meanwhile, American poet Louise Gluck was granted the Literature Prize.
